This SAE Standard defines methods and messages to efficiently translate sequences of text and other types of data into and out of indexed values and look-up tables for effective transmission. This document defines: a Methods and Data Elements for handling indexes and strings in ATIS applications and message sets b Message Sets to support the delivery and translations of tables used in such strings c Tables of Nationally standardized strings for use in ATIS message descriptions And examples of each in illustrative portions. While developed for ATIS use, the methods defined in this document are useful for any textual strings in any Telematics applications found both in Intelligent Vehicles and elsewhere.

Comparison of GATS Messages to SAE ATIS StandardsJ2539_201906 (Current)6/11/2019
This SAE Information Report provides a comparative summary between the various messages found in the SAE ATIS standards work (notably SAE J2313, J2353, J2354, J2369 and J2374) and that found in the GATS standard (Global Automotive Telematics Standard). GATS is a message set meant to be deployed on mobile phone systems based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) phone system which is being deployed in European markets and which the SAE may need to harmonize with as part of the World Standards activities of TC204. This document provides an overview of the various types of supported messages and how they compare with US terms and messages. Some selected features of the GATS work are recommended for assimilation into the next revision of ATIS standards. No attempt at determining a U.S. policy in this regard is provided. This document seeks to provide the reader familiar with SAE ATIS with a high level overview of technical knowledge of the GATS approach in similar areas.

Increased and enhanced connectivity is a megatrend impacting all ground vehicles, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles to off-highway equipment. So it's no surprise that connectivity is the theme for the SAE 2016 Commercial Vehicle Engineering Congress (http://www.sae.org/events/cve/), with several panels devoted to different aspects of the topic, such as how CVs will be affected by the Industrial Internet of Things. Helping to shape the event's program was Dr. Wilfried Achenbach, Senior Vice President, Engineering and Technology, Daimler Trucks North America, and other executives from DTNA, which is fulfilling the Executive Leadership role this year. Dr. Achenbach's responsibility covers the full development process including styling, design and testing for all Class 6-8 conventional trucks for the U.S., Canada, Mexico and other export countries. DTNA's Engineering and Technology department is part of Daimler Trucks' Global Engineering operation and is headquartered in Portland, OR. He recently shared his thoughts about a variety of pressing technical issues, to be discussed in greater detail at the ComVEC event from October 4-6 in Rosemont, IL. The telecommunications industry has begun firming up plans to upgrade from 4G to 5G cellular networks, citing the automotive industry as an important beneficiary. Tier 1s are beginning to incorporate this fifth-generation wireless technology into their plans to enhance safety as they push toward autonomous driving. Deploying 5G into the market by around 2020 was a focus at the recent Mobile World Congress, with connected vehicles playing a large role in show's telecom-industry announcements. LG Electronics and Intel teamed up to bring 5G technologies to the vehicle. Ericsson and Geely Auto partnered around connected-car services, saying they will gradually introduce 5G-based autonomous-driving functionality.

Telematic service and equipment providers are racing to gain market share in what's expected to become a solid long-term market. Telematics is still considered a new technology in the high-volume automotive world, but it's rapidly heading toward the mainstream in the off-highway market. Service providers are transforming their strategies as they push technology to reduce costs and trim system sizes. A flurry of strategic moves so far this year underscore the importance vendors place on this market. The Rugged Telematics Alliance was formed in March by Axeda, LHP Telematics, Hirschmann, Methode Electronics, Morey Corp., ORBCOMM, and Telenor. They quickly rolled out a preconfigured tracking and monitoring unit that will help companies get to market quickly.

Optimal Route Planning Algorithm Based on Real Traffic Network2005-01-16004/11/2005
In order to perform the Optimal Route Planning avoiding traffic congestion, the structural elements (Rode type, Link type, Facilities type, Lane number, Turning type) in digital map and real-time traffic information are required. However, subjectively tuned cost weights of these elements, non theoretical relationship, and partially supported real-time traffic information that are mostly used for this implementation are not enough to satisfy. Therefore, in this research, by analyzing the relationship between the previously acquired traffic information history for some period of time and elements in digital map, we introduce the reasonable traffic information model that makes to estimate the speed information. Including the estimated speed, all the important factors of map database and the driver's preference, finally we made the cost model. Using this model, we can provide an appropriate Optimal Route Planning for driver without applying real-time traffic information and overcome the limit of difficulties to set theoretical relationship between the structural elements.

Driver Performance Improvement Through the Driver Advocate: a Research Initiative Toward Automotive Safety2000-01-C07511/1/2000
The flood of information reaching drivers - telematics, infotainment, collision warning and others - requires a new look at the car's user interface. Using concepts from affective computing, social sciences, cognitive psychology, and more traditional human-machine interface design, the Driver Advocate, a driver assistance interface being developed by Motorola, orchestrates the driver's attention to the most important task in a useful and acceptable manner. The Driver Advocate monitors all driver-related controls along with information from telematics, navigation and chassis control systems. For example, during a high workload situation the Driver Advocate will withhold non-essential incoming information until the driver has reacted to mission critical information, thus minimizing potential driver distraction. The purpose of this paper is to outline the research Motorola has initiated to better define the emerging opportunities and challenges.

The basic goals of privacy and authenticity of personal data are summarized, and examples of potential threats to privacy in telematics applications are provided. Probable telematic transactions for the automotive environment are analyzed for typical versus necessary personal content. The question of privacy versus confidentiality versus security versus authenticity is discussed in the context of system design and service provider responsibilities. Several examples of how current telematic systems address privacy are provided, and worldwide trends in architectures followed the "designed in privacy" concept are briefly described.
