Wireless Security in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks: A Survey

Vehicular communications face unique security issues in wireless communications. While new vehicles are equipped with a large set of communication technologies, product life cycles are long and software updates are not widespread. The result is a host of outdated and unpatched technologies being used on the street. This has especially severe security impacts because autonomous vehicles are pushing into the market, which will rely, at least partly, on the integrity of the provided information.We provide an overview of the currently deployed communication systems and their security weaknesses and features to collect and compare widely used security mechanisms. In this survey, we focus on technologies that work in an ad hoc manner. This includes Long-Term Evolution mode 4 (LTE-PC5), Wireless Access in Vehicular Environments (WAVE), Intelligent Transportation Systems at 5 Gigahertz (ITS-G5), and Bluetooth. Comparison of GATS Messages to SAE ATIS Standards

This SAE Information Report provides a comparative summary between the various messages found in the SAE ATIS standards work (notably SAE J2313, J2353, J2354, J2369 and J2374) and that found in the GATS standard (Global Automotive Telematics Standard). GATS is a message set meant to be deployed on mobile phone systems based on the GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) phone system which is being deployed in European markets and which the SAE may need to harmonize with as part of the World Standards activities of TC204. This document provides an overview of the various types of supported messages and how they compare with US terms and messages. Some selected features of the GATS work are recommended for assimilation into the next revision of ATIS standards. No attempt at determining a U.S. policy in this regard is provided. This document seeks to provide the reader familiar with SAE ATIS with a high level overview of technical knowledge of the GATS approach in similar areas.

Up to now, there is no standard methodology that addresses how driver distraction is affected by perceptual demand and working memory demand - aside from visual allocation. In 2009, the Peripheral Detection Task (PDT) became a NHTSA recommended measure for driver distraction [1]. Then the PDT task was renamed as the Detection Response Task (DRT) because the International Standards Organization (ISO) has identified this task as a potential method for assessing selective attention in detection of visual, auditory, tactile and haptic events while driving. The DRT is also under consideration for adoption as an ISO standard surrogate test for driver performance for new telematics designs. The Wayne State University (WSU) driver imaging group [2, 3] improved the PDT and created the Enhanced Peripheral Detection Task I (EPDT-I) [4]. This paper elaborates how within the framework of the new Dutch National Transport Policy Paper the high expectations regarding contributions of new technologies will influence the objective to further improve road safety. In this respect it may be concluded that: - New telematic applications are coming, either as an addition to current instruments or sometimes even as a replacement for existing instruments. - As an example for this development it may be concluded that Intelligent Speed Management has potentials, there is public acceptance and promising perspectives for possible effects. - In order to proceed with these technologies it is important to show their benefits in relation to acknowledged safety problems.

Due to the safety-related nature of in-vehicle systems and the increasing complexity of distributed telematics software services, protocols, and communications mechanisms, the need exists for a comprehensive, extensible approach to manage and prioritize applications and resources. The characteristics for such an approach include predictability, support for the user experience, error handling and preemptive correction, and support for unknown future applications and capabilities. This paper provides a structure for addressing telematics services, discusses the characteristics required for application and communications resource prioritization and management, and describes an extensible approach for managing complex interactions in current and future telematics systems.

Privacy and Authenticity in Telematics Systems

The basic goals of privacy and authenticity of personal data are summarized, and examples of potential threats to privacy in telematics applications are provided. Probable telematic transactions for the automotive environment are analyzed for typical versus necessary personal content. The question of privacy versus confidentiality versus security versus authenticity is discussed in the context of system design and service provider responsibilities. Several examples of how current telematic systems address privacy are provided, and worldwide trends in architectures followed the "designed in privacy" concept are briefly described.
