The design trend for interior parts of cars in light colors in shades of beige and grey is a global reality and has increased the demand in new models replacing traditional black color. One of the most important features for the appearance is to keep the color and stay clean the surface of the car interior parts. This development aims to improve the resistance to dirt and staining on artificial leather applied in seat cover with light colors. Comparative dirt and staining trials were conducted with soil, coffee and indigo jeans through abrasion testing by Crocking, followed by clean fabric removal. The performance evaluation was done by through microscopy assays, spectrophotometry to analyze color variation after dirt test in the original samples and dirt test in the same samples exposed to XENON and heat for aging. Finally, this development brings solutions that improves consumer satisfaction. The improved life cycle performance of the car seat surfaces kept clean is the core of this

From pineapples to bacteria, Envisage's research is focused on new mobility's ‘inside’ story. Evolving vehicle engineering constantly reshapes vehicle architectures. But along with electrified drive-trains and autonomous capabilities is the need for a mindset shift in materials, opening the way for new sustainable solutions in color, materials and finish (CMF). Future cabins could have pineapple, banana, coconut and eucalyptus among the material solutions-with bacteria playing a potentially positive role. All these sources are at play for research designer Sammie Mayers-Nissen and her colleagues at Envisage, the U.K.-based specialist engineering services provider helping to find sustainable alternatives to plastic, leather and harmful dyes that still meet quality, durability and cost demands. “As always, in terms of R&D of alternative materials and color, production-cost consideration is the massive driver, with performance very close behind,” said Mayers-Nissen.

In the past half decade or so, more of these concepts have included biomaterials to promulgate a green image, if not to signal imminent production intent. At the recent LA Auto Show, Honda revealed its FC Sport hydrogen-powered, three-seat sports car concept, with exterior panels “intended to use plant-derived bioplastics.”

The customer increased sensitivity to air quality problem and the natural influence of smell on human behavior affect the purchasing decision as the opinion on the vehicle quality during its life. So the olfactory quality is an even more important issue. Since the early 80's the car manufacturers have been working on the olfactory quality assessment using panel tests with trained or untrained sniffers. The subjective tests are expensive and require a not negligible time to be organized. The Centro Ricerche FIAT evaluated the applicability of an electronic nose to assess the odor quality and compared the obtained results with the votes of a jury.

Current designs put automotive instrument panels and other interior trim parts under severe heat and light stress. Vinyl itself can be easily formulated to pass the most rigorous oven aging and light stability tests. With a semi-rigid polyurethane foam backing as is currently used in these applications even the most stable vinyls fail to pass proposed new specifications. This study deals with the mechanism of what is going on in the polyurethane backed vinyl that brings about this instability.

The initial function of headliners in automobiles was to conceal the rough appearance of the exposed roof construction. As the roof construction evolved towards solid metal, the requirements for headliners grew to include acoustic and styling properties. Today, fiberglass-based headliners have the major share of the North American market in high and mid-line vehicles. However, there is a recent trend to find substitutes for fiberglass headliners because of their skin irritation effects on assembly workers. Headliners based on formable and self-skinning polyurethane foam have gained wide acceptance in Europe as an alternative to fiberglass. This paper discusses the different PUR processes involved and the characteristics of the finished headliners produced with these PUR foams.

Reduction of steel sheet thickness as a means of reducing vehicle weight may necessitate some method of enhancing flexural stiffness. Three basic types of sheet stiffening methods have been investigated: integrally formed rib stiffeners, foam-backed sheets and embossed material. Means of calculating the stiffness obtained by each method is presented. The stiffness of integrally formed rib-stiffened sheets depends on the size and spacing of the ribs. The increase in stiffness of foam-backed sheets depends on the thickness and density of the rigid plastic foam. Embossed patterns increase sheet stiffness provided the embossing is relatively deep compared to sheet thickness.

Based on the merits of cross linked polyethylene foam, i.e. good thermoformability, low weight, strength, and laminability to other materials, Dynamit Nobel has developed new techniques and components for the trim in automotive vehicles. We have described trim parts such as roof linings, floor coverings, seats, trunk lining, and hood lining which are either being tested or already installed on standard models. They offer advantages over traditional components with regard to weight, comfort and price.

CONSTRUCTIVE criticism of automobile bodies as now built is given herein, based on experience gained in driving five-passenger sedan cars of many makes a total distance of nearly 10,000,000 miles in one year in tests at the General Motors Proving Ground. The fault finding, although humorously exaggerated, will be valuable if taken seriously, as it gives to all body designers and builders the benefit of testing experience that few companies are in a position to gain at first hand. The author treats his subject from the viewpoint of the abstract customer; that is, the automobile-purchasing public as a whole and as represened by the imaginary average man, who is assumed to have average stature and body structure and to drive all the different makes of car. Thus he is assumed to change from one to another make frequently, instead of becoming used to only one or two cars. Factors that influence the initial and the repeated purchase of a car are given in the order of their importance, and
