SAE TOMORROW TODAY: Michigan: The New Epicenter of Aerospace

As the birthplace of the automotive industry and the home of several aviation firsts, Michigan offers unique advantages to the rapidly expanding space economy. To make the most of this opportunity, the Michigan Aerospace Manufacturers Association (MAMA) has convened three public-private partnerships: the Michigan Launch Initiative, Space-Enabled Communications for Advanced Mobility, and the Mid-America Hypersonic Suborbital Test Range. These programs provide a collaborative platform for public-private partners to support satellite launch capabilities, test commercial and national security applications, and expand 5G connectivity, among other opportunities. We sat down with Gavin P. A Review of Current Understanding of the Underlying Physics Governing the Interaction, Ignition and Combustion Dynamics of Multiple-injections in Diesel Engines

This work is intended to be a comprehensive technical review of existing literature and a synthesis of current understanding of the governing physics behind the interaction of multiple fuel injectio ns, ignition and combustion behavior of multiple-injections in diesel engines. Multiple-injection is a widely adopted operating strategy applied in modern compression-ignition engines, which involves various combinations of small pre-injections and post-injections of fuel before and after the main injection and splitting the main injection into multiple smaller injections. This strategy has been conclusively shown to improve fuel economy in diesel engines while achieving simultaneous NOx, soot, and combustion noise reduction in addition to a reduction in the emissions of unburned hydrocarbons and CO by preventing fuel wetting and flame quenching at the piston wall. Object Tracking Comparison for Automated Vehicles Using MathWorks Toolsets

Object trackers are a tool to achieve accurate object state estimation over time. Due to their complexity, a framework to experiment with different variations of trackers and their subcomponents is desired. This drove the authors research and experimentation with object tracking using MathWorks toolsets. In this paper, three object trackers - Point Target Tracker (PTT), Gamma Gaussian Inverse Wishart Probability Hypothesis Density (GGIW-PHD), and Gaussian Mixture Probability Hypothesis Density (GM-PHD) - are compared in simulation for track statistics and object/track accuracy. The results show that a rectangular GM-PHD multi object tracker outperforms the other trackers. A follow up is shown using real-world data and the process used to get the sensor data into the appropriate MathWorks format. The impact of COVID-19 prevented the collection of ground truth data so the real-world data cannot be compared using the same metrics. For this reason, the simulation portion of this paper will

Nondestructive Measurement of Residual Strain in Connecting Rods Using Neutrons

Abstract Increasing the strength of materials is effective in reducing weight and boosting structural part performance, but there are cases where the residual strain generated during the process of manufacturing of high-strength materials results in a decline of durability. It is therefore important to understand how the residual strain in a manufactured component changes due to processing conditions. In the case of a connecting rod, because the strain load on the connecting rod rib sections is high, it is necessary to clearly understand the distribution of strain in the ribs. However, because residual strain is generally measured by using X-ray diffractometers or strain gauges, measurements are limited to the surface layer of the parts. Neutron beams, however, have a higher penetration depth than X-rays, allowing for strain measurement in the bulk material. The demand for weight reduction of vehicles is growing in compliance with CO2 emission control requirements. Also, demand for copper is on the rise with an increase in the number of electric vehicles because their motors and wiring require a lot of copper. This has raised concerns about higher copper prices and vehicle weight. Recently, attempts to reduce vehicle weight have been actively made by partially replacing copper with aluminum, which is lighter and less expensive. Although the use of aluminum wires on limited areas of some vehicles has already been reported, that on all areas has not been reported yet. The authors focus on reducing weight of wiring harnesses, which is about 20 kg per vehicle, and consider using aluminum instead of copper as the conductor of the electrical wires. Traversing the ‘Autonomous Trust Gap’

During a recent conference hosted by semiconductor maker NXP in Silicon Valley, I had the honor of moderating a panel titled, “The Autonomous Trust Gap.” The timing was fortuitous in the wake of several recent road incidents involving partially automated vehicles that had been developed by companies based in the region. While the panel didn't include any of the incumbent automakers, it did feature executives from EV startup Byton, software companies Renovo and Cloudera, and chipmakers NXP and Nvidia. The entry of the SilV tech community into the automated driving space over the past few years has been a somewhat worrying development. Not so much because of what they could do to the incumbent industry-after all, every business sector must eventually evolve or die. My personal concerns have been more related to the tech mindset that has developed over the past two decades: Move fast and break things-and don't be too concerned that you're shipping minimally viable products.

Research on Improving Throwing Power of Electrodeposition Coating by Optimizing Paint Properties

By increasing the percentage of highly dissociative strong acid components included in the neutralizing acid of the electrodeposition coating, it was possible to improve electrical conductivity and coulomb efficiency and achieve excellent throwing power. The GA cratering caused by the increase in the strong acid ratio was resolved by setting the strong acid ratio to 90% while reducing MEQ. By increasing coulomb efficiency, the quantity of hydrogen gas produced during electrodeposition was minimized, and as a result, gas pinholes remaining in the coating were reduced, increasing the smoothness of the coating beyond than that of the current materials. As a result of this study, the usage of e-coating per vehicle body was reduced by approximately 11%.

A Study on Clamping Force Control in Pulley of CVT for Fuel Efficiency

In CVT, it is essential to optimize Clamping Force in Pulley to improve fuel efficiency. Clamping force in pulley is shaft force to control primary pulley and secondary pulley. It is determined by pulley ratio, input engine torque in CVT and safety factor for protecting belt slip. It is difficult to calculate correct clamping force and detect belt slip. Generally speaking, CVT has a tendency to have excessive Safety factor to prevent belt slip. This excessive safety factor in clamping force leads to lower fuel efficiency. In order to find an optimal clamping force, ‘the minimum clamping force’ which will not induce belt slip should be determined even during decreasing clamping force. Furthermore, clamping force should be maintained near the ‘minimum clamping force’. For this, following logics was developed First, the logic to calculate first safety ratio of belt, Second, the logic to detect belt slip state, Third, the logic to calculate the optimal clamping force. Recap of the 2013 University of Louisville Baja SAE team's season. The team had its best season to date placing 8th, 5th, and 2nd overall in the three North American competitions hosted by the Society of Automotive Engineers. With out a doubt the biggest highlight of the season was passing the University of Michigan in the final corners of the last lap of the Rochester endurance race to take first place in the race and clinch 2nd place overall for the competition; the highest finish for U of L at competition ever! The team was also awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in the design events at Tennessee, Washington, and Rochester respectively; not bad for a team that's only been to design finals four times in its history at UofL.
