The Distributed Simulation of Intelligent Terrain Exploration2018-01-191510/30/2018
In this study we consider the coordinated exploration of an unfamiliar Martian landscape by a swarm of small autonomous rovers, called Swarmies, simulated in a distributed setting. With a sustainable program of return missions to and from Mars in mind, the goal of said exploration is to efficiently prospect the terrain for water meant to be gathered and then utilized in the production of rocket fuel. The rovers are tasked with relaying relevant data to a home base that is responsible for maintaining a mining schedule for an arbitrarily large group of rovers extracting water-rich regolith. For this reason, it is crucial that the participants maintain a wireless connection with one another and with the base throughout the entire process. We describe the architecture of our simulation which is composed of HLA-compliant components that are visualized via the Distributed Observer Network tool developed by NASA. Additionally, a well-known terrain exploration algorithm, which takes the constraint of a mobile ad hoc network into account, is summarized and then extended by using a trainable genetic algorithm to determine the movement of the robotic swarm at every time step of the simulation. The integration of this extended algorithm into the distributed simulation is discussed and the empirical results of a comparison between the original and extended versions are given. Our results suggest that the genetic algorithm serves as a useful aid in the simulation of coordinated exploration and provides a layer of flexibility, offered by the trainable parameters its fitness function depends upon, that allows for the introduction of new constraints while maintaining compatibility with dynamic shifts in priority.

The Impact of the Autonomous Vehicle in Society and in the Urban Mobility in the City of São Paulo2017-36-038611/7/2017
The safety, reliability and efficiency in the progress of the autonomous vehicle have increased in recent years. In parallel, companies in the segment of people transportation, either individually or shared, took the world leadership using smartphone app into a new concept of urban mobility with conventional vehicles with drivers, starting consequently a change of habit of the population, and defying the laws of local transport. These services for urban mobility are related as tendencies of driving forces in the face of the relevance of the limitations of resources, population density, greater awareness toward the environment and traffic congestion. The acquisition of the “own vehicle” as currently, conceived and successful by Alfred Sloan in the 1920s, has become a question for future generations. This study shows that the provision of a more secure service, reliable, and efficient, will enable a significant reduction in total cost of ownership to the increasingly sophisticated and highly informed generation Z, who continually seeks to optimize its resources, availability and quality of life in real time. It also shows how the autonomous vehicles will transform urban mobility in the next 20 years and the impact generated in the city of São Paulo, the largest city in Latin America and with more than 12 million inhabitants.

Cybercars for Sustainable Urban Mobility - A European Collaborative Approach2010-01-234510/19/2010
We know that the existing urban transport systems based on the private vehicle (necessarily relying mostly on fossil fuels) are not sustainable in terms of energy and land needs. On the other hand, public transportation systems are also not very efficient and do not provide a good service anywhere and anytime. Over the last twenty years, a new concept has emerged through strong cooperation between researchers, automotive companies, suppliers and transit operators. It is the concept of co-modal systems. This means well-designed systems that will combine the use of various transportation modes and in particular the individual vehicles and the mass transit systems. A key element of such a system is the Cybernetic Transportation Systems (CTS), which are based on fully automated urban vehicles. This paper will present these CTS and how they have emerged through a European collaborative approach. These environmental-friendly novel systems offer far-reaching solutions that will drastically mitigate or solve the problems that we encounter in current urban transportation systems. They will yield much more effective organization of the urban mobility, with a more rational use of motorized traffic; less congestion, pollution noise and CO₂ emissions and better accessibility and safety. The result will be a higher quality of living, an enhanced integration with the spatial and also societal development and advancement towards sustainability.
