Design, Optimization and Integration of the Suspension Mount / Bush, Spring, and Damper to Enhance Ride and Handling2024-26-038901/16/2024
The paper deals with the study of the damper tuning and the integration of dampers with mount / bush and spring. The ideal approach to tune the characteristics of the vehicle is to modify bushings and mountings, used in the chassis system. In the automotive components design, mounts and bushings especially instituted in suspension system are determinant components while dealing with the noise, vibration and harshness in automobiles. This study represents utmost benefits derived from the suspension dampers when focus is more on damping force, top mount gain and top mount phase. The paper emphasizes on the transition frequency and its significance. The case study referred in the paper are presented for the Macpherson and twist beam suspension system. Furthermore, the results of the study are verified by conducting experimental trials. The comparative results showcased 90% correlation and proved beneficial.

Road noise analysis using Component TPA and FBS with vehicle component modifications2025-01-005505/05/2023
Road noise caused by road excitation is a critical factor for vehicle NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance. However, assessing the individual contribution of components, particularly bushings, to NVH performance is generally challenging, as automobiles are composed of numerous interconnected parts. This study describes the application of Component Transfer Path Analysis (CTPA) on a full vehicle to provide insights into improving NVH performance. With the aid of Virtual Point Transformation (VPT), blocked forces are determined at the wheel hubs; afterward, a TPA is carried out. As blocked forces at the wheel hub are independent of the vehicle dynamics, these forces can be used in simulations of modified vehicle components. These results allow for the estimation of vehicle road noise. A novel framework for accelerating EDU NVH simulation using scalable transfer functions and evaluating manufacturing defects through space order excitation2025-01-004405/05/2023
In the ultra-luxury vehicle segment, achieving optimal NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance across a growing range of load cases in drive and regeneration conditions presents significant engineering challenges. As the complexity of load cases escalates with varying torque ripple and transmission errors, traditional time and frequency-domain simulations become computationally inefficient. To address these challenges, an in-house software framework that employs Noise Transfer Functions (NTFs) and Vibration Transfer Functions (VTFs) is developed. The system’s dynamic response is computed once and scaled to various excitation sources, which includes radial and tangential forces derived from EMAG simulations, and gear forces derived from MBS simulation. A study on editing method of road load spectrum of automobile rubber isolator using time-frequency domain methods2022-01-031403/29/2022
In order to enhance the efficiency of durability testing of automobile parts, a time-frequency domain accelerated editing method of road load spectrum of rubber mount on powertrain was discussed. Based on Stockwell Transform (ST) method and Accumulative Power Spectral Density (APSD), a new time-frequency domain accelerated editing method (ST-APSD) was proposed. The accumulative power spectral density was obtained by ST of the load spectrum signal of automobile powertrain rubber mounting force which is acquired by the real vehicle in the test field. The dynamic characteristics of hydraulic bushings/hydraulic mounts are related to their excitation amplitude and frequency, which are often not reflected in existing models. Based on the lumped parameter model of hydraulic bushings/mounts, this paper compares and analyzes the similarity of the working mechanism of hydraulic bushings and hydraulic mounts, and deduces the unified mechanical analog model. Development of high damping powertrain mount using thixotropic fluid2022-01-073403/29/2022
Vibration isolation performance and damping performance of powertrain mount are important for improving NV and ride comfort performances of the vehicle, respectively. In this research, based on the principle of liquid sealed mounts, we focused on the fact that the ideal fluid viscosity differs depending on the input frequency. By combining the liquid resonance phenomenon and thixotropic fluid, we developed a technology that balances a high level between low dynamic spring rate and high damping, which are trade-off items for liquid sealed mounts. The thixotropic fluid was blended with ethylene glycol aqueous solution as a base solution and smectite nano-cray as a thixotropic agent. From the view point of the viscosity corresponding to the shear rate and the viscosity at the high shear point, the optimum concentration of smectite was shown to be 1.5 wt%. The mount bracket is an important part of t he mount system, its dynamic characteristics will affect dynamic characteristics of the mount system, and then affect NVH of the vehicle. Based on the large error between the test result and the finite element analysis（FEA） result, the dynamic finite element model of the mount bracket is revised from the material parameters of the bracket and the equivalent boundary of the bolt joint. This paper presents a method to identify the parameters of the mount bracket model by combining modal test, FEA and the mathematical optimization model. Effect of engine mount stiffness on joint integrity and durability of mounts.2021-26-051409/22/2021
Powertrain mounts location and stiffness in vehicle plays very important role in improving vehicle noise and vibration which is caused by engine firing forces and road disturbances. Once locations are finalized based on initial calculation and packaging, then it is very much critical to play with mount stiffness to achieve required NVH level in vehicle. This paper describes the effect of mount stiffness on the bolted joint integrity. Stiffness fine tuning is done to improve vehicle level NVH and various iteration are done with change in stiffness values of A, B and C mounts. When stiffness specs are finalized it is recommended to do aquire road load data on the finalized stiffness mount and check for bolted joint integrity since load signature is varying significantly on mount w.r.t stiffness change. Design Improvement on Condenser Assembly under Dynamic Behaviour through Vibro-Acoustic Analysis2021-01-106508/31/2021
The automotive air-conditioning (AC) components fitted on passenger car having high vibration make significant impact on vehicle noise and harshness inside the cabin. Hence, it is necessary to reduce the vibrations within the permissible limit. This can be done by improving dynamic behavior of the assembly under vehicle fitments. The present paper explains about design improvement carried out on the condenser assembly to increase strength of the mounting brackets as well as to reduce the noise level by reducing the vibrations. Modal frequency response analysis has been performed on the existing condenser and found that there was relatively high vibration on the assembly due to low stiffness of the bracket. From the acoustic analysis, it was observed that the noise is occurring due to high vibration at resonance condition. A Comparative Study of Cradle and Sub Frame Type Powertrain Mounting System on Electric Vehicle2021-01-102208/31/2021
The growing demand of fuel and cost saving on vehicle, today’s vehicle manufacturer are working on various weight reduction initiative in EV. Lighter weight vehicle have bigger challenges to meet NVH requirement. There are two types of EV called modified and adopted EV’s are commonly in use. The sub frame type of EV system comes under the category of modified EV. In this paper, a mounting system is studied and compared for a cradle type EV as well as sub frame or saddle type EV. MATLAB based optimization tools are used for parameter optimization. The focus is put on the optimization of mounting system location and stiffness for energy optimization, CoG and TRA-EA optimization. The best engine mounting system is compared and adopted based on simulation. 12 DOF studied to address high frequency resonance issues for a sub frame type EV. Finally robustness of the system is checked based on various simulation and optimization.

Idle Vibration Robustness Analysis of An I3 Engine Without Balance Shaft2021-01-102308/31/2021
I3 engine has its unique advantage in helping OEM meeting the ever-increasing government regulations in emission and fuel consumptions. Its small size, low friction, and light weight provide OEM the opportunity in lowering the costs, reducing fuel consumption, and emissions. ISH predicts that the I3 engine will count for 38% of IC engine volume in 2025 in Chinese Auto Market. One of biggest issues of the I3 engine is its higher vibration levels, especially in idle conditions. This is primarily due to two reasons. First is that I3 engine cylinder layout results in 1st order inertia moments. Second is that I3 engine combustion produces higher combustion excitation torque with lower frequency (1.5th engine order). To compensate the 1st order inertia moments, a balance shaft is typically added to cancel these 1st order inertia moments. Most of OEM’s are using properly tuned hydromount to have best idling NVH performance. Hydro-mount design should be tuned at problematic frequency where we can get the very low dynamic stiffness and can get the required performance. Hydromount should be designed carefully otherwise there will be abnormal noise due to cavitation effect. Cavitation noise is such a noise which is very difficult to identify that it is coming from mount. Cavitation is the formation and collapse of vapor bubbles in a working fluid when local static pressure falls below the vapor pressure of the working fluid. Challenges and Approaches of Electric Vehicles Powertrain Mount System Optimization for NVH, Buzz Squeak Rattle and Durability2021-01-108508/31/2021
In electric vehicles, the powertrain mounting system design has challenges different from conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) powertrains. Due to the absence of source noise, the customer predominantly experiences the buzz, squeak and rattle (BSR) noise. The 6 degrees of freedom (DOF) modal frequency target is less stringent than a three-cylinder or four-cylinder ICE powertrain. The durability loads in EV also differ due to less powertrain weight. In this paper, a study has been carried out about balancing all three main performance parameters of modal decoupling, BSR and durability through powertrain mount design optimization. The article shows that a carryover ICE powertrain mount has typical issues in Electric Vehicle (EV). A case study has discussed in detail how to manage those issues. Finally, it is concluded that a particular focus is required during an early stage of mount design to address these challenges for an EV.

Simulation and Optimization Method of High Frequency Dynamic Characteristics of Rubber Mount2021-01-066304/06/2021
A non-linear viscoelastic constitutive model composed of Mooney-Rivlin model and multiple Maxwell models is used to calculate the high frequency dynamic characteristics of rubber mounts. The equivalent mechanical model of the rubber vibration mount is established and the difference between the drive-point dynamic stiffness and the cross-point dynamic stiffness is analyzed. The analysis shows that the use of the cross-point dynamic characteristic test method can eliminate the influence of the additional inertial force in the test, which is suitable for rubber mounts’ high-frequency dynamic characteristics test; at the same time, a finite element model of the rubber mount is built to analyze its cross- point dynamic stiffness and drive-point dynamic stiffness. The analysis results are compared with the experimental results which verifies the finite element model and the correctness of the mechanical model. Methods for Estimating Dynamic Stiffness at High-Frequency Ranges of Rubber Mounts with Second-Stage Isolators2021-01-067004/06/2021
Mount is a component used to connect the powertrain and the body, which plays an important role in isolating vibration from motor of electrical vehicles. As for traditional rubber mounts, the dynamic stiffness increases significantly with the increase of excitation frequency and will have a peak value, which is called "internal resonance" phenomenon. Compared with the traditional rubber mount, the rubber mount with second-stage isolators has a smaller dynamic stiffness at high-frequency ranges and is usually used to enhance NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) performance of electric vehicles at high-frequency ranges. This paper investigates a rubber mount with second-stage isolators. The second-stage isolators are assembled with bolt holes connecting with mount and car body. The dynamic shear test of rubber pieces at high-frequency (50~1500Hz) is carried out, and the viscoelastic constitutive model parameters of the rubber material are identified using the measured shear test

Vibration Analysis of an Electric Vehicle Mounting System under Transient Shock Conditions2021-01-066404/06/2021
Electric vehicle motors have the characteristics of fast torque response, large amplitude, and braking feedback torque. Therefore, the excitation of the electric vehicle powertrain has obvious transient impact characteristics, which put forward new requirements for the design of the mounting system. This article carried out the real vehicle test of rapid acceleration and rapid deceleration. A 12-degree-of-freedom nonlinear dynamic model of the electric vehicle mounting system is established. The model is used to calculate the vibration acceleration of the active side and the passive side of the mount, and compared with the test value to verify the correctness of the simulation model. The impact degree, the maximum pitch angle of the powertrain, and the longitudinal acceleration of the powertrain centroid are used as evaluation indicators to analyze the transient response of the electric vehicle mounting system under rapid acceleration and rapid deceleration conditions. Calculation and Optimization Methods for the Dynamic Performances of a Power-Train-Subframe Mounting System2021-01-065804/06/2021
A dynamic performance calculating model for a powertrain-subframe mounting system (PSMS) is presented. Calculation methods for determining the dynamic displacements of a powertrain center of gravity (CG), the dynamic displacements of a subframe CG and the dynamic reaction forces of each mount in a PSMS under ground and motor shake excitation are developed in this paper. An optimization procedure based on the genetic algorithm and SQP is developed for reducing resonance peaks of the reaction forces at mounts. A generic PSMS with three powertrain-subframe mounts and four subframe-body mounts is used to validate the optimization method. The optimization results demonstrate that the results using the optimization procedure can effectively reduce the reaction forces at mounts.
