Interference between Tin Sulfides, Graphite and Novolak Oxidation

Tin sulfides (SnS and SnS2), represent a safer and greener alternative to other metal sulfides such as copper sulfides, and MoS2 etc. Their behavior is usually associated to that of solid lubricants such as graphite. A mixture of tin sulfides, with the 65 wt% of SnS2, has been characterized by scanning electron microscopy and by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). In order to investigate the effect of tin sulfides upon two crucial friction material ingredients, two mixtures were prepared: the former was made by mixing tin sulfides with a natural flake graphite and the latter was made mixing tin sulfides with a straight novolak. They were analyzed by TGA and differential thermal analysis (DTA) in both nitrogen and air. Some interferences were detected between tin sulfides and graphite in air. However, the oxidation of tin sulfides was concomitant with that of the novolak so that the resin onset decomposition-oxidation was considerably shifted to higher temperatures allowing the resin to

In recent years, due to a growing demand for improvement in the performance and reliability of automotive fuel pumps and the advancement of globalization, automotive fuel pumps are being used with inferior gasolines that include more sulfur, organic acids or compounds, compared to gasolines used in general regions. Conventionally, bearings in these fuel pumps have mainly been made of sintered bronze alloy. With this bronze alloy, however, it is difficult to achieve a significant improvement in the tribology characteristics of bearings, in order to meet the demands for performance improvement, etc., and corrosion is severe in inferior gasolines that contain highly-concentrated organic acids or sulfur and the corrosion products that accompany them. Therefore, in order to obtain fine tribology characteristics and superior corrosion resistance in gasolines with highly-concentrated organic acids and sulfur, various copper-based alloys were studied using the powder metallurgy process. Particle Size Effects of Tin Sulfides in Disc Brake Pads

1 Modern organic bonded friction linings contain both tin-(II)-sulfide and tin-(IV)-sulfide as solid lubricants. Due to their chemical and physical properties tin sulfides act as friction stabilizers and improve wear of disc and pad or lining not only in low steel and non-steel formulations but also in semimetallics. The influence of the particle size distribution in disc brake pads was investigated systematically. In the first run different particle size grades of tin sulfides were prepared: large particle, technical, fine and super fine grade. The medium diameter (D 50), surface and sieve residues were determined by using international standard testing methods. The thermal properties of the pure grades were investigated by DSC/TGA showing that the particle size distribution influences oxidation kinetics. The decomposition behavior was determined in inert atmosphere applying the same measurement system. To complete these data samples of tin sulfides were treated in an oven under air

A Comprehensive Study of Chemical and Physical Properties of Metal Sulfides

1 Natural and synthetic sulfides are important components in friction materials such as pads, linings and even clutch facings and are summarized under the term “Friction Stabilizers”. Their unique properties lead to a high and stable friction coefficient, low wear of pad and disk and decrease of vibrations. The tribological behaviour of friction stabilizers strongly depends on load and temperature. Analytical methods like DSC and TGA are used to investigate the chemical changes of these compounds during braking at high loads and temperatures. Tribological phenomena also strongly depend on the physical properties of the metal sulfides such as crystal structure, Mohs hardness and character of the chemical bonding. This discussion will cover the characteristics of classical natural sulfides like antimony, molybdenum and lead sulfide but also of synthetic complex sulfides.
