Quality of the Shear Trimmed edge of HSLA 550 steels is significantly affected by process variations such as Shear Trimming Clearance, trim tolerance, burr height and clamping force. All these parameters largely influence the characteristics of the Shear Affected Zone, a region on sheet metal where it undergoes deformation during the trimming process. The Shear Affected Zone is predominantly vulnerable to failure due to work hardening and the effects of strain rate, induced by the tonnage during the trimming operation. This research investigates the applicability of ADC12 aluminum alloy in sand casting processes and compares its casting behavior and performance with that of conventionally sand-cast alloys such as A356 and AlSi10Mg. ADC12 is primarily utilized in high-pressure die casting (HPDC) and low-pressure die casting (LPDC) due to its excellent castability, pressure tightness, and favorable mechanical properties in thin-walled components. However, its use in sand casting is minimal globally, primarily due to the alloy’s high silicon and iron content, which can lead to poor feeding characteristics, increased porosity, and structural non-uniformity in non-pressurized molds. In this study, 3 mm thick test castings were produced using conventional sand casting methods, with particular attention to mold and core design to simulate challenging flow and solidification conditions. Dynamic Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Polymer-Coated Jute Fibers for Enhanced Automotive Parts2024-01-501902/12/2024
Automobile parts often require materials that offer high strength and durability. With the continuous push for environmentally friendly solutions, natural fibers such as jute have emerged as a potential alternative for synthetic fibers in automobile components. In this study, we aim to enhance the properties of jute fibers by coating them with different polymers and assessing their suitability for automotive applications. We treated jute fibers with various polymers—low-density polyethylene, polyester, and araldite epoxy. The performance of these treated fibers was compared using fiber tensile experimentation, differential calorimetry, and dynamic mechanical evaluation. Our findings reveal that the treated jute fibers exhibit a tensile strength of 598 MPa. However, when coated with polymers, there’s a variance in strength: polyethylene (263 MPa), polyester (191 MPa), and epoxy (281 MPa). Enhancing Microstructural Characteristics and Mechanical Properties in Friction Stir Welding of Thick Magnesium Alloy Plates through Optimization2024-01-501402/06/2024
This research explores friction stir welding (FSW) to examine the mechanical characteristics and microstructure of thick plates manufactured from the Mg-8Al-0.5Zn alloy. Applying the FSW procedure to warm-form an Mg-8Al-0.5Zn alloy for the differential case covering the gears in the car’s automotive technology. Weld quality was significantly improved after using response surface methodology (RSM) to examine various welding parameters and find the best configurations. Improved grain refinement and phase distribution in the weld zone were found in the microstructural study of 11.5 mm thick magnesium alloy plates using RSM-optimized parameters. By dynamic recrystallization, the grain size was reduced to 16 μm, which is fifteen times smaller than the original material, thanks to the good results of single-pass FSW welding. Ultra Flow, High Stiffness Polypropylene Material For Light Weight Exterior Trim Panels2022-01-039403/29/2022
Light weighting is an effective strategy in increasing energy efficiency in the automotive industry. In this paper, mass reduction with cost benefit was targeted in an exterior trim panel. Modified polypropylene copolymer (PPCP) material was developed for an exterior trim large panel (1400 X 700mm) with integrated grill mesh. The part had challenging requirements in terms of slow speed impact, structural durability, dimensional stability, aesthetics, thermal ageing resistance, cold impact resistance, scratch resistance and weathering resistance. The compounded PPCP material met these requirements by having ultra-flow behaviour, optimum tensile strength, modulus, impact strength and thermal properties. The combination of material, optimized part and tool design led to weight savings and considerable cost reduction.

High performance unfilled polypropylene material for light weight interior trims2022-01-039303/29/2022
Light weighting is important to improve energy efficiency in the automotive industry. In this paper, high performance unfilled polypropylene copolymer (PPCP) material was selected and developed to reduce weight and cost without compromising on functional requirements for interior trims such as door trims, lower pillar trims, scuff trims and rear quarter trims (RQT). Interior trims are loaded with challenging requirements such as stiffness, dimensional stability, haptic feel, scratch resistance, cleanability, thermal stability, toughness, low emission and weathering resistance. Reactor polymerised PPCP material compound met these requirements by having ultra-flow behaviour, optimum tensile strength, balanced modulus - impact strength, scratch resistant, low emission and improved thermal properties. The combination of material, optimized part and tool design led to weight savings and considerable cost reduction.

The spring is an important component part of the suspension of motorcycles and automobiles. As the spring constitutes an unsprung weight, the suspension complies more quickly if the spring weighs less. Especially in off-road motorcycles, which are often subjected to extremely hard conditions such as full acceleration and braking, quick turning and jumping, a reduction of unsprung weight contributes to an enhancement of dynamic performance. As an effective means to reduce weight, use of the light-weight titanium instead of the commonly used steel is seen in some examples. However, applications of titanium are limited only to large-diameter springs because of its higher cost and challenging in coiling. Rubbers are widely used in many engineering applications such as tubes, timing belt, tyre etc. Apart from its functional use, it can also be used as damping material in many applications in order to dampen the vibrations transmitted from one structure to other. The present research work focus on the development of CB filled SBR and Graphene filled SBR. Both rubber samples were investigated for its mechanical properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Experimental modal analysis was also done to examine the dynamic characteristics such as damping and natural frequency along with its mode shapes for the prepared samples and compared. It is observed from the results that the inclusion of graphene in SBR improved its vibration characteristics in addition to the improvement of mechanical properties.

Mechanical and microstructural behaviour of friction stir welded Al6061/Cr2O3 metal matrix composite.2021-28-022410/01/2021
Aluminium metal matrix composite are widely used in various field like aerospace, marine and automobile application. The application of composites necessitates joining process and its difficult due to different materials. To address the considering difficulties the present study is, Cr2O3 was reinforced in Al 6061 matrix in 2% to 6% in the incremental step of 2%. The stir casting technique was used to fabricate the composites with 300rpm stirring speed and the stirring time duration was 3min throughout the fabrication process. The PCBN tool is used for prepared friction stir welded (FSW) joints and tool having 6.7mm pin diameter and 6mm pin height. The fabrication process is conducted by 1000rpm tool rotational speed and 25mm/min welding speed. Shot peen is the one of the latest technologiesused to improve the bending Fatigue of the CWP. In this particular case- 6 CWP are taken for the Study to understand the effect of the operations after shot peen process. 3 Samples are named as Batch A, another 3 samples are named as Batch B. Both the batch CWP are shot peened. Then as a regular production Practice the Batch A CWP are process through Hard TurningAbrasive Lapping Hot Lubriting (Mn Phosphate)Fully Finish Ready for Assembly. Then Both the Batch A & batch B samples are taken for Residual Stress analysis using X-Ray Diffraction Technique. The measurement location is 50 microns below the surface. Experimental investigations on material compatibility of a methanol fuel supply system of a spark ignition engine2021-01-118909/21/2021
Material compatibility of fuel supply system comprised of different materials including elastomers (nitrile, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) nitrile, chloroprene, natural rubber and ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM)), aluminium and fuel filter (outer tin coated circular plate and paper) with methanol was studied. The specimens of the parts of the fuel supply system were immersed in methanol for a period of ninety days under atmospheric conditions. The properties of the specimens such as physical changes using scanning electron microscope (SEM) image of the surfaces and mechanical properties including tensile strength and strain at break were studied. It was observed from the images that the coating over the circular plate of fuel filter eroded while elastomers developed a whitish coat on their surfaces.
