Steel-based Laminates for Lithium-ion Pouch Cell of Electric Vehicles2026-26-0186To be published on 01/16/2026
Aluminium foils have gained traction with EV battery manufacturers for their pouch cell format. Over the years it has evolved as a material of choice, but it is still plagued by issues of stress concentration, swelling due to lower strength and stiffness of base aluminium layer. Preliminary investigation revealed that laminates using steel foil material (thickness <0.1mm) could be a potential candidate for EV pouch cell casing. Thus, steel-based laminate was developed meeting key functional requirements (e.g. barrier performance, insulation resistance, peel strength, electrolyte resistance, formable without cracking at edges, and heat sealing compliant). This innovative patented steel-based laminate was further used to manufacture pouch cell prototypes (maximum capacity 2.5Ah) for key performance tests (e.g. cell cycling, nail penetration and thermal runaway). Silicone and rubber composite, often called Ceramifiable Silicone Rubber (CSR) has proven to show excellent mechanical and thermal properties. CSR materials have been mainly used in industrial applications like electrical insulating cables, decorations, and fire-proof materials. The mechanical and ceramifiable properties of CSR can be altered by changing the silicone rubber matrix and by adding the right additives or fillers. In this work, we prove the potential of CSR composites as thermal insulating materials in battery packs. Specifically, we explore the usage of CSR inside the battery pack to improve safety during thermal events. We also characterize the material properties before and after exposing the CSR composite to elevated temperatures and flame. Finally, we investigate the effectiveness of the CSR composite sheet in preventing or delaying cell-to-cell thermal propagation during a thermal runaway event inside the battery pack. A Review on Fire Prevention and Suppression Solutions for EV Battery Packs2024-26-001201/16/2024
The lithium-ion batteries are susceptible to fires or explosions due to their extremely volatile nature. The energy-dense batteries, such as LiNi_0.8 Mn_0.1 Co_0.1 O_2/Graphite (NMC811) battery that meets the consumer range demands, are most vulnerable under thermal events. A wide number of solutions are being explored to suppress or prevent battery fires. The solutions range from integrating active cooling techniques, passive heat dissipation using heat carrier pads, thermal insulating materials to prevent thermal propagation, safety vents to remove ejecta, and protection circuitries with advanced battery management system. In this paper, we review various safety solutions employed in battery packs for preventing or suppressing potential fire during any thermal runaway event. New system for the measurement of sound-insertion loss on small samples: a comparison with ASTM-E2611 and ASTM E90 test procedures2025-01-011605/05/2023
This article follows a companion article presented at the SAE NVC 2021, in which a new system for the measurement on small samples of the normal-incidence Insertion Loss (IL) of multilayers used for the manufacturing of automotive sound package parts was first introduced. In addition to simplifying the evaluation of the sound-insulation of multi-layers used to produce sound-package components, the system aims to overcome the limitations of the test procedure based on the ASTM E2611 standard. In this article, the latter point is demonstrated by comparing the insertion loss results obtained with the new system with those obtained with the test procedure based on the ASTM E2611 standard on a few multilayers commonly used for the manufacturing of automotive sound package parts. Results indicate that the results obtained by means of the newly developed system are more meaningful, practically usable and less prone to edge-effects, compared to those obtained according to the ASTM E2611 test

In recent years, bearing electrical failures have been a significant concern in electric cars, restricting electric engine life. The most frequent material used to make bearings is 52100 alloy steel. This work aims to introduce a coating approach for preventing electrical erosion on 52100 alloy steel samples. This paper summarizes the causes of shaft voltage and bearing currents. Meanwhile, the paper discusses standard electrical bearing failure mechanisms, such as morphological damages and lubrication failures. Alumina coatings are suitable for insulating the 52100 alloy steel samples because alumina coatings provide excellent insulation, hardness, and corrosion resistance, among other characteristics. Membrane-type acoustic metamaterials consist of a tensioned membrane fixed on the frame and an additional mass attached to the membrane. The sound insulation performance of membrane-type acoustic metamaterials is much better than the acoustic mass law predictions at transmission loss (TL) peak frequencies. In this paper, an equivalent mechanical model of membrane-type metamaterials is established. Through the vibration analysis of the membrane with tensile force as the main elastic restoring force, an approximate estimation method of the TL peak frequency of Membrane-type acoustic metamaterials is proposed, the effects of membrane tension, membrane size, mass and size of additional mass on the peak frequency of TL were analyzed quantitatively. The COMSOL software was used to establish a finite element analysis model and calculate the TL curve of the metamaterial at a frequency of 100-1600 Hz.
