Intelligent Navigation for Music and Media from Multiple Sources2006-21-005210/16/2006
The adoption of digital media in the car is rapidly growing; with that are an increasing number of disparate media sources such as portable media players, satellite radio, and HD radio. Media sources utilize various user access models creating a critical standardization problem in the entertainment sub-system design making navigating media in the car not only difficult but a dangerous driver distraction. Each media source creates different metadata and uses slightly different user models contributing to the overall lack of metadata standardization and can result in inaccurate or missing tag information, and multiple categories for the same piece of media. A band like “The Rolling Stones” may be categorized as “Classic Rock” on a satellite system but as “Rock” on a portable MP3 player plugged into the entertainment subsystem. In the car, lack of standardized metadata creates a dangerous environment as the consumer is forced to manually navigate through media; a serious driver distraction. Solutions addressing these issues use technology to unify the metadata from virtually any media source and offer advanced ways to simplify media and music navigation such as; personalized playlisting technology-allowing rapid access to the appropriate content; extended metadata, for DVDs for example, allowing access to program content from the rear seat as well as providing filtering options for the parents; and voice control capabilities allowing drivers to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel while navigating their media collection through intuitive voice commands. Intelligent navigation in the car is the must have technology that allows consumers to better manage, enjoy and discover digital media.

Distributive Lighting Systems for Interior Applications2002-01-09793/4/2002
With the development of cars towards mobile offices and homes, people are spending more time inside their vehicle than ever before. Consequently, humanization of car interiors is becoming increasingly important to enhance the drivers' comfort and thereby his performance and safety. This is acknowledged by the car industry and has led to an increasing number of light outlets in the car interior over the last decade. Lighting plays a valuable role in the way the car's interior environment is perceived and this in turn determines the drivers' and passengers' comfort and safety. While up to now functional lighting applications (e.g. switch indicators and reading lamps) have dominated the car interior, these do not contribute significantly to its humanization. Ambient, orientation and contour lighting applications reveal the real value of a car's interior environment. Large-area plastic light guide devices enable us to combine several of the above mentioned interior lighting applications, e.g. ambient lighting and a reading spotlight, utilizing a build-in depth of only 6-8 mm. In this set-up, the ambient lighting function is served at luminance levels complying with the low glare requirements set for not disturbing the drivers' view. In another solution, an 80 – 150 lux reading spot illuminating an area of about an A3 size paper can be generated from the same device, using a single 16W bulb with integrated reflector. In this presentation we will elaborate on several examples of such distributive lighting systems.

The configuration of high performance modern commercial aircraft vary considerably from one model to another. The location and design of lighting fixtures, particularly for exterior lighting, are affected significantly by these configuration differences. It is important to consider lighting during the early design stages of the airplane to maximize quality and usefulness of the resulting lighting systems. Lighting plays an important part in aircraft safety, crew performance and passenger comfort.
