Simultaneous TOC Reduction and Biofouling Prevention in BWP Processed Water2008-01-214606/29/2008
This paper addresses the development of a novel technology to simultaneously reduce total organic carbon (TOC) and microbial count (MC) in biological water processor (BWP) processed water. This approach also creates a biocidal environment in BWP processed water before being fed into the reverse osmosis (RO) and post processing systems. The technology is based on an advanced oxidation process using an on-demand oxidizer generator, which does not require consumable chemicals. The SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) Phase I feasibility studies successfully demonstrated the process efficacy in the reduction of both TOC and MC of the BWP effluent. Also, the residual disinfectant and reduced TOC in the treated effluent minimized fouling the RO membrane and water lines. In the Phase II project, a prototype is being fabricated and evaluated for its ability to reduce TOC and MC, and extend RO membrane life.

Effects of Growth Conditions and Pretreatment on the Iodine and Chlorine Susceptibility of Mucoid and Non-Mucoid P. aeruginosa93217407/01/1993
To compare the disinfection susceptibility of mucoid and non-mucoid P. aeruginosa in relation to EPS production, cultures were grown to stationary phase in defined media with a high or low C/N ratio using glucose as carbon source. Cultures diluted with phosphate buffered water pH 7.2 were pretreated by vortexing, centrifuging, or blending with 10 mM EDTA in PBW before disinfection with iodine, chlorine or monochloramine. It is suggested that differences observed between disinfectants may be due to their reactivities with cell constituents or modes of action. EPS may play a significant role in bacterial resistance to iodine and other halogens, although susceptibility varies markedly in relation to nutrient status and sample treatment before disinfection.

Application of Hair Analysis for Biological Monitoring of Toxic Substances in Space93209507/01/1993
Human scalp hair is increasingly regarded as a valuable indicator tissue for biological monitoring of environmental exposure to toxic substances. Hair provides both current and past records of exposure during prolonged periods of time. To validate hair monitoring for assessment of toxic substances in space, a unique biological model was developed. Human scalp grafts were transplanted to athymic BALB/c-nu/nu nude mice and then animals were exposed continuously over 2 months, using implanted osmotic pumps, to methylmercury (MeHg), a substance known to be incorporated into hair. Mercury concentrations in hairs were determined using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry by segmental analysis of single strands. Blood, skin and brain concentrations of methylmercury were measured by cold vapor analysis. Human scalp hair grown in nude mice showed long-term persistence of human characteristics. Generation of Iodine Disinfection By-Products (IDP's) in a Water Recycle System92136207/01/1992
Iodine is being considered for disinfection of recycled hygiene and potable water in Space Station Freedom. Like chlorine, the halogen iodine can form disinfection by-products (DBPs) when used as a disinfectant in waters with dissolved or colloidal organic compounds. Recycled shower and laundry wastewater, urine and condensate from the space cabin atmosphere all have large amounts of dissolved and colloidal organic compounds and may generate iodinated DBP's which can be toxic to humans. We have investigated the formation of iodinated DBP's (IDP's) in model compounds typical of shower wastewater and condensate. The selection of these model compounds and flask experiments to test for IDP formation have been described. Methods for reaction, extraction and analysis for IDP's also have been developed. We have tentatively identified likely organic precursors from recycled water and several iodinated organic compounds formed during the reaction with iodine. As we increase the complexity of
