Project Ciclar: A Light, Electric Powered Vehicle for Selective Waste Collection2012-36-020610/02/2012
In response to the increasing scarcity of oil reserves and the negative impact carbon emissions have on the environment, clean technologies and renewable energy must take priority in research. Project Ciclar combines clean technology with sustainability to create an environmentally friendly vehicle for selective waste collection. Unlike conventional waste collection vehicles in Brazil, the Electric-powered Lightweight vehicle for selective waste Collection (ELC) is powered entirely by electrical and solar energy, thereby ensuring zero emissions. Even though ELC is electric, a major concern of the project was to produce a vehicle that would be as energy efficient as possible. By employing an electric motor, ELC reduces the per kilometer cost of operation by approximately 50% in comparison to petroleum-based fueled engines. Mechanical Extraction of Power From Ocean Currents and TidesTBMG-763003/01/2010
A proposed scheme for generating electric power from rivers and from ocean currents, tides, and waves is intended to offer economic and environmental advantages over prior such schemes, some of which are at various stages of implementation, others of which have not yet advanced beyond the concept stage. This scheme would be less environmentally objectionable than are prior schemes that involve the use of dams to block rivers and tidal flows. This scheme would also not entail the high maintenance costs of other proposed schemes that call for submerged electric generators and cables, which would be subject to degradation by marine growth and corrosion.

The potential for electric utility utilization in an environmentally acceptable manner of various fossil fuels is discussed. Fuels and fuel processes considered include Alaskan oil with either desulfurization of the fuel, or stack gas treatment of the combustion products, shale oil, and coal and coal derived synthetic fuels. The latter category includes solvent refined coal, low and medium Btu gas. methanol from coal as well as “true” liquid fuel from coal and the direct utilization of coal either with stack gas scrubbing and a conventional boiler, or in a fluidized bed boiler.

There are six reservoirs with 147 earth and rockfill dams containing 203.5 million yd3 of material and extending 60 miles in total length. Construction is over a 12-year period.

Between 1800 and 1958 the U.S. population multiplied 33-fold. In the same time the use of energy grew 69-fold, and the energy was used much more efficiently. The sources of energy changed also. In 1800 over 94% of U.S. energy came from burning wood. In 1900, coal was supplying 75% of our energy requirements. In 1958, oil and gas supplied over 70% of our energy. Most of our electricity is generated from steam-turbine power, with water power helping. Many methods of generating electricity are now under development. Some of these methods may loom large in the over-all energy picture, whereas others are primarily for highly-specialized uses, as in space travel.
