Study of Style wheel rim failure Due to Rim and disc assembly interference2026-26-0541To be published on 01/16/2026
This study focuses on the investigation of wheel rim failures near weld zone during repeated cornering induced by interference between the rim and disc during the wheel manufacturing assembly process. Strain gauges were employed to capture real-time stress and strain distributions at critical zones during interference fitting. The experimental results revealed that improper interference levels lead to significant stress concentrations, often surpassing the material's elastic limit, initiating micro-crack formation and promoting fatigue failure. Detailed strain analysis indicated that both radial and axial stresses contribute to long-term structural degradation. The study highlights the critical role of dimensional tolerances, surface finishes, and assembly forces in minimizing stress-induced failures. Recommendations are provided for optimizing design and assembly practices to enhance the durability and reliability of automotive wheels.

Wheel Analysis Process Considering Bolt Torque Sequencing for Assembly and Disassembly2024-26-029001/16/2024
This paper is centered on developing a methodology to simulate actual physics of the assembly and disassembly process for rear wheel components of the tractor / off highway vehicle. The components, cast wheel and sleeves, are having interference fit and are assembled through sequential bolt torquing. Effect of different torque values, torque sequence pattern and number of torquing cycles on the structural integrity of the components after assembly is studied in this process. The methodology also encompasses evaluation of residual strains during the assembly and then subsequent disassembly process of sleeves and cast wheel, while reckoning different non-linear material models for nodular and gray cast iron. The process predicts the loosening behavior of the bolts during assembly process and eventually helps to find optimum bolt torquing pattern with minimum preload loss. One of the important aspect to consider at the design stage is the condensation of water vapor inside the lighting system, under particular weather conditions of temperature and humidity, which may compromise the device functionality. Condensation of water vapor is an issue affecting functional and aesthetics of Head Lamp. The current paper analyses the process of water vapor condensation inside an automotive LED head lamp. This paper also discusses the design methodology to avoid condensation under particular conditions. Design methodology includes design considerations for better air movement for heat management, material selection, ease of moisture exchange, breather or vent selection, placement. Additionally, this paper would also discuss about effective use of simulations tools, test methods and assembly process guidelines to avoid impact due to condensation. This paper would consist of one example with application of above methodology, its test and field results.

This research explores the potential of Vision Language Models (VLMs) specifically LLaMA 3.2 Vision, GPT-4o, and Microsoft Phi-3 vision for automating noise spectrogram analysis. In this paper, a driver identification scheme is studied using general driver inputs such as accelerating, braking and steering behavior, in addition to the settings related to driver’s physical characteristics, such as driver’s seat position. Several drivers are selected with various ages, genders and driving skills to participate in the study. Their driving data is collected using the same test vehicle, and while driving on the same routes. This helps eliminate the inherent vehicle to vehicle variations and the impact of the route differences and enables the identification algorithm to focus on the driving behavior. The driving routes are broken down into shorter segments where the driving features are calculated and populated in these segments. To reduce the identification bias towards certain rare events in the ride, the features are reset at the beginning of each trip segment. Sealant is applied between joined aircraft parts in the final stage of the assembly, before installation of permanent fasteners. In this paper a novel approach for aircraft assembly simulation is suggested, which allows to resolve the transient interaction between parts and sealant in the course of airframe assembly process. The simulation incorporates such phenomena as compliance of parts, contact interaction between them and fluidity of sealant with presence of free surface. The approach based on fluid-structure interaction techniques consists of two basic steps: at the first one the pressure of sealant is found after corresponding fluid dynamics problem is solved and at the second the displacements of parts and sealant are calculated through the solving of contact problem.
