This paper evaluates the handling characteristics of three-axle bus by using the unique comprehensive vehicle handling evaluation index. With the theory of total variance, the generalized side-slip angle unified transfer function is introduced to derivate the evaluation indexes of reaction time, transition time, damping ratio and total variance considering the suspension roll steer and camber thrust. The three-axle bus suspension roll steer and camber thrust produces extra lateral force. The three-axle vehicle response degree following the step steer input is analyzed with the effect of suspension roll on three-axle bus by using the total variance approach. The vehicle designers could use this approach to get optimization design parameters of bus suspension. The unique total variance evaluation index considering the suspension roll steer is useful and could serve as an important tool for evaluating the effect of suspension roll on three-axle bus handling dynamics.
