With growing advancements in railway industry in India, structural reliability of railway gearboxes is paramount for the safe and efficient operation of railway systems. This study investigates the reliability of bolts connecting gearbox housings using the VDI 2230 standard, a comprehensive guideline for the calculation of high duty bolted joints. The VDI 2230 methodology is employed to evaluate the stress distribution, fatigue life, and failure probabilities of the bolts under various operational conditions. Finite element analysis (FEA) is utilized to simulate real-world loading scenarios, providing a detailed understanding of the stress and strain behavior in the bolts. The theoretical calculations are validated through these simulations, ensuring accuracy and reliability of the results. The findings reveal that adherence to the VDI 2230 standard significantly enhances the structural integrity and longevity of railway gearbox bolts. By following these guidelines, the likelihood of bolt failure is reduced, leading to lower maintenance costs and improved safety. The study highlights the critical role of standardized approaches in the design and maintenance of railway components, emphasizing the need for rigorous application of established engineering standards. This research contributes to the body of knowledge in railway engineering, offering practical insights for engineers and maintenance professionals in the field.
