- The recent intensive efforts of manufacturers, airlines, and the FAA in Phase I of the U.S. Supersonic Transport Program has provided the aviation world with a better understanding of many technical and economic problems. One of these problem areas involves the technical and economic impact of SST fuel requirements. The author presents an airline’s analysis of the magnitude of the fuel question and suggests some technical design considerations which could contribute to SST economic success. Emphasis is placed on the responsibility of aircraft and engine designers in attention to detail design and on the petroleum industry to provide adequate quality control and quality improvement.
