- Single plate dry clutch has to sustain higher thermal stresses combined with different dynamic operating conditions during vehicle usage. With growing population of traffic in cities, temperature sustainability of clutch is affected which is evident from the rise in complaints on clutch from metropolitan cities. Child parts of the clutch cover assembly such as diaphragm spring, straps, etc. should be able to sustain the higher operating temperature without much deterioration in the assembly functional parameters such as release load, clamp load, pressure plate lift. Further, different operating speeds of the engine induces different dynamic stresses in the clutch components, adding into the thermal effect. The effect of critical performance attributes of clutch system is on clutch pedal effort characteristics. The deterioration in the release load of the clutch directly affects the clutch pedal effort characteristics and clutch pedal feel for the driver. The clutch release system should be designed so as to optimize the forward clutch pedal effort as well as the return pedal effort characteristic. This paper presents study done using rig level tests to understand the effect of thermal and dynamic stresses on the performance of clutch system in terms of clutch pedal effort characteristic. The test conditions were derived based on field data analysis and critical observations done during Road Load Data activity. The paper discusses the effect of standalone thermal and dynamic stresses on the behavior of the clutch system as well as combined effect of thermal and dynamic stresses on the behavior of the clutch system. The study is extended to both hydraulic as well as mechanical clutch release systems. The study signifies the deterioration in the clutch pedal effort performance characteristics of clutch system under these conditions and correlates / comments on the subjective feel of the user at each performance level.
