Alternate Fuels are to be redefined as current definition says any fuel other than Diesel or Petrol. CNG / LNG / LPG / Bi-fuels / Synthetic fuels / Electric energy and Hydrogen fuel are various alternate fuels; many more are expected to add mainly Solar energy in future. CNG / LNG / LPG are alternative fuels but from fossil fuels category. Renewable Fuels are fuels produced from renewable resources. Examples include: biofuels Hydrogen fuel and fully synthetic fuel (also known as electro fuel). Electrical energy & Hydrogen energy produced from conventional way can be classified as non-renewable fuels. Interestingly, Bio-fuels and Synthetic fuels are produced from the waste. Therefore, these fuels serve dual purpose - consumption of waste and generation of energy. While studying the fuels, we need to understand one more thing how these fuels are used, this is explained as below. The Alternative fuel choice is not easy as there are many things involved to be considered. We need to take holistic approach to avoid future issues. Alternative fuels need to be had following 6E's. 1. Environment Friendly - by producing less waste, PM, CO, unburned HC & SO2 satisfying Future Emission Norms - for production & consumption from 'Well to Wheel' 2. Energy security - Relying on local sources of energy, sustainably - Ease of availability of raw material, inputs 3. Energy efficient, high Cal value 4. Economic Viability & Affordability 5. Ease of Transportation & Storage 6. Engineering compatibility for vehicle specification/performance.
