Global warming is the driver for the introduction of CO2 and Fuel Consumption legislation worldwide. Indian Truck manufacturers are facing the introduction of Indian Fuel Efficiency Phase 2. In the European Union the CO2 emission monitoring phase of the most relevant truck classes will be completed in June 2020 by usage of the Vehicle Energy Calculation Tool VECTO. Indian rulemaking is currently also considering an adaptation of VECTO for the usage in the India Indian truck market used always to be very cost sensitive. Introduction of Bharat Stage VI Phase I already led to a significant increase of product costs, which not directly manifest benefits to the end users. Therefore, it will be of vital importance to keep the additional product costs for achievement of future fuel consumption legislation as low as possible as long as they don’t refund them in real world operation. So far, confirmation of Indian Fuel consumption requirement fulfillment takes place under constant driving conditions. Introduction of VECTO would mean that dynamic driving as well as manufacturer specific sales distribution has to be considered for fulfillment of CO2 requirements. This paper will therefore present different approaches for the entire powertrain for both regulatory frameworks especially focusing on possibilities at the transmission. The approaches will be evaluated in terms of their impact on fuel consumption as well as in terms of their impact on attendant symptoms which may pave the way for acceptance in the market. Especially when focusing on technologies that are needed to satisfy CO2 fleet approaches a modular transmission family offers interesting possibilities with positive effects on gradeability and driving comfort. It will especially serve as a basis for future tightening of the fuel consumption and CO2 emission limits. The transmission family is AMT (automated manual transmission) ready and therefore allows eliminating the driver specific impact. This allows reproducible engine operation under ideal conditions and therefore to low fleet fuel consumption.
