- Modelling and simulation are powerful tool for analysis of new system design. Model based design is an engineering approach that uses models as an important tool for design, analysis, implementation, testing and validation of a system or product. It is a mathematical and visual method of addressing problems associated with designing complex control, signal processing and communication systems. This paper focuses on model-based design approach using MATLAB Simulink. Also, a case study is discussed where mathematical models are discussed in order to design a EV Powertrain. Development of a dynamic model to investigate the behavior of an electric motor based on torque varying characteristics. The discussion in this paper revolves around equation-based modelling of the vehicle drivetrain, motor and battery subsystem. The models result into vehicle torque, motor torque, motor current and voltage requirements and also the battery sizing as well. Based on the powertrain requirements resulted through the models, suitable motors are shortlisted. Further, Optimum lap simulations are performed which create and analyze a digital prototype of a physical model to predict its performance in the real world in order to determine the performance matrix of different EV Powertrain configuration. Selection criteria is basically done on model-based design which enhances the use of Simulink models and optimum lap simulations to take crucial decisions to select the most appropriate configuration and also regarding the design aspect as well. Moreover, studying both AC as well DC motors thoroughly will be beneficial to know the key concept and deciding factors of a suitable package. Using real-world example, the paper shows how teams across industries can adopt Model-Based Design to reduce development time, minimize component integration issues, and deliver better design.
