Authors Abstract
Content
To date ultra-high strength aluminium alloys, such as AA7075, were used predominantly in aerospace industry where high cost and manufacturing challenges can be forgiven due to high value lightweighting potential of the material. This made the aerospace manufacturing techniques inaccessible to mainstream automotive industry. HFQ technology was developed to enable low cost high volume manufacture of high and ultra-high strength aluminium alloys opening up new lightweighting opportunities for automotive industry. The remining challenge was to develop and prove out a reliable joining technology for 7XXX series alloys. This paper discusses the linking of the HFQ manufacturing considerations, SPR joining and vehicle body thermal treatment required to process 7XXX made safety cell for EV vehicles.
