Engine air intake water ingestion needs to be estimated and minimized in order to maximize filter life and to ensure optimal engine operation. In addition, air intake water separation features need to be implemented to minimize water ingestion into the filter and then into the engine. In this paper, we replicate the air intake water separation test performed on a Volvo class-8 truck based on SAE J2554 test procedure. Using CFD, two different intake grille configurations were evaluated, first one is without a grille and a second with the intake grille. In the study presented within this paper the engine air intake water separation performance of a class-8 truck with and without the air intake grille are compared using SIMULIA PowerFLOW Lattice Boltzmann based solver. The simulation results were compared to the physical test and show good correlation with the experimental data.
