As vehicle emission norms are becoming stringent worldwide, the application of Diesel Particulate Filter to trap particulate matter is becoming widespread in diesel engine powered vehicles and equipment. A Calibration transfer from the well established emission technology from Europe to India is not a feasible approach because of challenges in typical Indian driving cycles and Common Rail System limitation due to cost sensitive market requirement . This paper explains techniques used to overcome the challenges with respect to Indian conditions. With catalyst protection integrated in the technique and a robust model based exhaust temperature control, a complete closed loop technique of DPF regeneration is achieved. This technique combined with model based soot load calibration has proven as an effective countermeasure for DPF calibration improving DPF regeneration efficiency, good repeatability of temperature control, higher average DPF temperatures, and shorter regeneration durations resulting in lower oil dilution which is applied to various applications (PC, CV, and OHW)
