Recently, automotive customers were preferring a larger interior space in their vehicles. To this end, in the development of a passenger car, more interior space can be secured only when the engine room is reduced in the specifications of the entire given vehicle. In this reduced engine room layout, such as braking and driving stability, new technology parts must be continuously and installed in the engine room. So, a design methodology is required that minimizes the size of each system component installed in the engine room while improving the performance of the vehicle. In the compact engine room layout, the range of the intake system is very large. In this paper, the intake system is downsized according to the engine characteristics and installed in the front direction of the engine. The vehicle power performance was improved by decreasing the inlet temperature. NVH performance was improved by increasing stiffness of the intake filter’s mounting surface, and applying a support ring for damping airflow noise inside the intake hose. In addition, it was installed by securing additional space for installing an integrated electronic brake, an anti-roll stabilization auxiliary battery, etc., which are new technology components in the engine room. The intake system change concept and new technology parts have been proven to improve performance under actual vehicle test conditions, and pedestrian protection, as well as improving fuel economy performance and cost/weight. By improving the harmony between the parts in the engine room, the aesthetics of the product has been improved. In addition, this paper is based on the optimal design technique in vehicle engineering design. This concept presents efficient implications for the development of a modular architecture post engine room platform for combustion engines and electric base vehicles such as MHEV, PHEV, FCEV, and EV.
