- The stable start-up of diesel engine under extreme conditions of high altitude and low ambient temperature is significant to national economic-development, national defense force and user safety. However, there are few studies on cold start performance and transient emission of diesel engines with ambient temperature below 0℃ and altitude above 2000m. In this paper, a simulation test system of low temperature cold start of diesel engine at high altitude is established. Studies on cold start of a national Fifth emission high pressure common rail turbocharged heavy diesel engine at 10℃, 0℃, -10℃ and -20℃ and altitude of 0m, 3000m and 4000m are carried out. The mechanism of low temperature ignition of diesel engine at high altitude is proposed. The performance and combustion characteristics of diesel engine with variable altitude and ambient temperature were studied. Conclusion: The altitude increase and the ambient temperature decrease will lead to the deterioration of cold start performance of diesel engine. When the ambient temperature is below -10℃ and the altitude is above 3000m, the engine will have obvious cold start difficulty or even failure, and the speed increase and idle period of cold start are obvious and the speed fluctuation is obvious. When the altitude is above 3000m, the proportion of single parent peak and child parent peak at different ambient temperatures is about 60%, which can make the start successful. When the altitude is 4000m, the single parent peak and ignition cycle appear , and the engine speed fluctuates violently and cannot be increased. The peak value of cylinder pressure and average effective pressure increase with the decrease of ambient temperature and decrease with the increase of altitude, while the maximum instantaneous heat release rate and the phase of combustion starting point increase.
