Aviation industry foresees future of air transportation will significantly benefit from autonomous technologies. However, autonomous technologies are not easily monitored and manageable by traditional means. Emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) could be a major enabler on this front, but the regulators perceive AI based systems as opaque models and have challenges in terms of explainability and trustworthiness forcing the regulators and industry to develop new certification standards and guidelines for AI systems with special emphasis on the trustworthiness and explainability. This paper attempts to discuss possible guidance on certification aspects of explainable AI/ML systems in aerospace industry. This paper also provides insights on different techniques of AI Explainability (XAI) and its importance in safety critical systems certification. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Explainable AI (XAI), Safety critical systems, Trustworthiness, Certification, Aerospace
