The availability of crash data recorded by automotive event data recorders (EDRs) has grown significantly over the past two decades. These data have been tested and analyzed via numerous instrumented crash tests with validation results reported in many technical papers. More recently, vehicle infotainment systems have offered investigators another avenue to historical timestamped speed data as well as historical location data. These data can possibly go back in time for days, weeks, months, or years. These data have also been validated through the analysis of instrumented testing, with the results published in several technical papers. A branch of digital forensics known as vehicle system forensics has sprouted in the last several years revealing a wealth of data recorded by modern automobiles that may serve as key evidence to investigators. In addition to historical vehicle speeds and locations, investigators are now able to acquire the historical occurrences of vehicle events. Recoverable events can include when and where doors were opened, when and where gear shift selector changes were made, when a paired device was connected to the system, when and where the forward facing camera detected a speed limit sign, when and where the vehicle ignition status was changed, when phone calls were placed by a paired phone, what geographical area was displayed on the infotainment screen, and when and where active handling events occurred, such as automatic emergency braking while in reverse. To analyze the data from these events, several instrumented tests were run in different global locations using Ford vehicles manufactured with SYNC Generation 3 version 1 (SG3v1) and SYNC Generation 3 version 2 (SG3v2) systems. The data from these modules were acquired with the Berla iVe system and compared to the instrumented data.
