- Mechanical loss reduction of the bearing leads to suppression of the fuel consumption of the engine which can contribute to the realization of sustainable society. Thus, a bearing friction reduction technique of was studied. There have been many studies relating to friction reduction techniques regarding mixing and boundary lubrication. On the other hand, there are few studies on hydrodynamic lubrication, and the main methods have been to related changing the low-viscosity oil and changing the size of bearings. In driving of the urban area of passenger car, lubricant condition of the engine bearings is largely depended on the hydrodynamic lubrication. Therefore, power loss of this running condition cannot be ignored. In this study, the reduction of the friction loss at hydrodynamic lubrication was focused. A method for reducing the shear resistance of the oil was examined, and its effect was confirmed by experiments and calculations. The test was carried out at the static load bearing tester designed for friction measurement of hydrodynamic lubrication. In order to further reduce the loss, it was confirmed that the properties of the bearing surface must be oil-repellent rather than lipophilic. Further, the swell shape of the bearing surface showed good result for parallel to the direction of rotation. Bearing roughness lowers friction due to the fine surface.
