Over the recent years with a strong focus on optimizing its early performance prediction capabilities, vehicle manufacturers around the world are reviewing their virtual development processes with the intent to address the vehicle attributes that are most important to its customers during the early stages of development. However, reliable performance prediction through simulation in the concept development phase for new technologies and new entries in different vehicle segments is a very challenging task. Furthermore, the strong need for increased vehicle energy efficiency requires a precise balancing with the driving performance. Therefore, in order to respond quickly to a rapidly changing market and customer preferences, the development of a robust process to reliably evaluate vehicle concepts is absolutely mandatory. This paper is focused on the prediction of vehicle driving attributes (more specifically handling, and lap time) through the application of various objective and subjective metrics using a combination of full vehicle system simulation and benchmarking data, as well as considering assessments in various standardized maneuvres. This way it is possible to design a top-down cascading concept for target setting according to market demands or OEM vehicle characteristics. Based on the presented study, various vehicle parameters can be applied and optimized in the early stage of vehicle development. In addition, this paper shows a sequential flow for a virtual concept evaluation process and consider integrated functional method for vehicle dynamics applying full vehicle simulation and competitive vehicles test data. Finally, the method presented in this paper can be applied to various vehicle segments using different powertrain architectures such as ICE, (P)HEV, EV as well as to high performance vehicles, so that it can enable various solutions in order to satisfy the set targets.
