A Review of Actuators for Automotive Electromagnetic Active Suspension

- This review paper presents the state-of-the-art of actuators for automotive electromagnetic active suspension, specifically which have been applied on passenger cars recently or would have been applied on passenger cars in the coming years. The actuators are explored and compared in five aspects: system scheme, layout and structure, special components, function and performance, and improving potential. It provides an overview of two promising actuator configurations in consideration of industrial application. The electrohydraulic actuator could benefit compact design in suspension envelopment, and it seems to be an appropriate approach for active suspension system suppliers to put effort on. The electromechanical actuator benefits the potential of quick response and high efficiency, and it would be an approach worth OEMs to challenge.
