Consumers say safety is priority one, but deaths on the highway are rising as government regulators impose tougher-and more costly-safety standards on automakers.
For the eager buyer with sights set on a particular new vehicle, having to delay the purchase because of personal financial constraints or other reasons is a disappointment, but not a matter of life or death.
