Technological advances into autonomously controlled vehicles facilitate road trains and troop support.
Platooning of trucks and cars has been a long-sought-after goal of engineers who believe that the autonomous control of vehicles can save lives and fuel. While the technology of platooning or road trains is well known and studied, it has not transitioned beyond the test track because of the cost to install the necessary sensors and other infrastructure directly onto motorways.
To surmount that problem, engineers are taking a different tack. Instead of focusing on the highway, engineers are now instead zeroing in on the vehicles. Some believe it to be a much more cost-effective solution that provides most of the desired benefits of platooning.
