What Do They Do? How Do You Install Them?

Of the hundreds of different types of fasteners used within the aerospace industry, the coiled spring pin was specifically invented as a solution to a “pinning” issue related to securing jet engine turbine blade assemblies back in the 1940s. No other fastener (pin, bolt, rivet, etc.) was strong enough to resist the forces generated during use that was also flexible enough to enable the pin to absorb shock and vibration to isolate the loads from the host material. It is this unique combination of strength and flexibility that enables the coiled pin to preserve the integrity of the hole and ensure that assemblies subject to dynamic loading stay intact.

Today, coiled spring pins are used extensively throughout the aerospace industry for a wide variety of purposes. They are used to fasten two or more components together within evacuation slide mechanisms and cargo straps; they are used as hinge pins within interior latch mechanisms in overhead bin storage, seat reclining mechanisms and tray tables; and for alignment within hydraulic pumps and engine covers.
